Instead, you might just be able to observe razor history in the making (of a footnote, but so be it), and watch a meme change people's daily habits. Comrade Shaveletariat’s, are you tired of getting gouged when buying mere razors? Get a jar and fill it with a half inch of mineral oil and keep your razor in it when not in use. This increases the life of the blade exponentially. The reason is because razors dull because of corrosion, NOT wear. Go figure, because the same collection of companies who make blades also make creams and gels, and the first ingredients in all of them are corrosive acids. Please tell your friends at your next shaving party, so that we may subvert the capitalist oppressor razor barons in their male hygiene monopoly. Vive le partisan! For more details, just follow the link:

Your topic seems really intersting and unique and as kathy would say bangin'. It seems that so far you have some good resources that fit your topic really well and seem rather reliable. I look forward to reading your probably humerous paper, it seems like it will be a good one.

Your argument is very clear. you've already decided to focus in on the history of advertising which seems perfect for doing research. I'm interested to see how you are going to relate the ads to the attitudes toward men at the time. & like you said, a lot more research will have to happen before you come up with a stronger argument. Yes, I would read yours because I think it is an intriguing argument that you make!!

Your argument is wicked clear, slash it sounds really interesting. I never really thought about the history of the razor blade, its just one of those take it for granted things. Thats great that you found research online, especially that timeline. Um, I recommend you continue being awesome? Slash there might be some books on shaving, you might want to check that out. (If theres books on music videos, there has to be a book on shaving/razors)

1. great topic, not too broad. i like that you have already narrowed it down to not include the history of shaving itself, which i have no doubt it complicated

2. You seem to have done some research, considering that you have learned enough to thoroughly narrow down your topic and seem to have some basic knowledge of what you're doing.

3. according to your descriptions, i'd think your sources are reliable, but i'd have to see the sight in order to definatively say so.

4. this sounds interesting, have as much fun as possible doing it.

I think you've chosen a good and very specific research topic. Also, the fact that you're not doing the history of shaving won't harm the overall product of your project at all. This way it'll be more concise. I know you say you have more research ahead of you, but it definitely seems like you've got a good foundation. Your sources thus far seem reliable, based on your descriptions. I would just recommend to complete the research I guess...but that's kind of a given :) Can't wait to see the result- interesting topic!

That is a unique topic-I never would have thought of how ravor blades evolved or even how the whole crave to shave got started. It would be interesting to compare and contrast shaving ads in Europe vs. here because their shaving habits are pretty different from ours as far as the women are concerned.

I think that this topic sounds very interesting. It seems like you're formulating an argument around specific American standards of beauty.

Allison,

Are you doing a cultural history of shaving? Or, a cultural history of Gillette ads? I think it will be very interesting to trace the mutual relationship between these two ideas, but keep in mind that you need to fine tune your approach. What will be your specific argument or angle? What does the razor blade suggest about American culture? and how does Gillette's advertising reinforce or subvert this logic?

Allison,

Either one of these topics makes a lot of sense. iI also like your idea of limiting yourself to one particular item, even a brand if possible. This will make your cultural/hisotical analysis that much more manageable. A cultural history of men's shaving and facial hair sounds very fascinating to me. it may eveen open up deep cultural questions about women and shaving (ssomething, as you may very well know, is understood quite differently in different parts of the world -as well as in different moments of US history -what might ads tell you about this phenomenon?).

Do some research on both topics and see what you come up with. Then start to forumlate your argument/thesis in more detail after you have forumlated some ideas based on your reading of outside sources.

The idea is half the battle, so you are well on your way!
